Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
