Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
