Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
