The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
